PISMO BEACH – FREE weekend trolley rides have been extended from Avila all the way to Pismo Beach, giving San Luis Obispo County residents and tourists more opportunities to experience these scenic communities this summer.

The new service which starts this Saturday, Memorial Day Weekend, will transport passengers between superb dining, shopping and beach areas throughout the northern Pismo coastline and Port San Luis. Riding the Beach Trolley is fun, free, convenient, and no car seats are required!

Riders board the trolley that runs hourly starting at 10 a.m. every weekend throughout the summer. Service ends at 8 p.m. on Saturdays and 5 p.m. on Sundays. Stops include Port San Luis, the Sea Life Center in Avila Beach, Avila Hot Springs Resort, near the Bob Jones Bike Path, the KOA campground, and the Avila Barn, and at all the resorts in Shell Beach and Pismo Beach. See www.slorta.org/avila  for a full schedule and list of stop locations.

On Friday nights, the trolley is also ready to take you, your family and friends to enjoy the Avila Fish and Farmer’s Market in picture-perfect Avila Beach. Passengers can ride to the Farmer’s Market in Avila Beach every thirty minutes between 4:15pm-8:05pm from the Port, the Park & Ride lots on Ontario Road, or the Avila Bay Estates. Service is FREE and riders receive a “Market Buck” good for $1 off food or produce.

The Beach Trolley is operated by South County Area Transit (SCAT), which provides bus service seven days per week throughout the Five Cities area.  Connections to regional service in San Luis Obispo County are available at the Pismo Premium Outlets. The Beach Trolley remains FREE thanks to support by the Avila Beach Community Foundation and the City of Pismo Beach Conference & Visitors Bureau.

Vandenberg Air Force Base 23-story rocket launch, 1/20/11

Today at 1:08 pm VAFB is scheduled to launch the largest rocket ever to take off from the West Coast.  San Luis Obispo County should be able to view and feel the launch. See the article below from LA Times for more info.

Vandenberg Air Force Base

to launch 23-story rocket

W. J. Hennigan

LOS ANGELES — Perched in the fog-covered hills of Lompoc sits a massive 23-story rocket ready to blast off from Vandenberg Air Force Base.

The three-engine Delta IV Heavy rocket, the tallest ever to be launched from the base, will be carrying a top-secret spy satellite for the U.S. government capable of snapping pictures so detailed it can distinguish the make and model of an automobile thousands of miles below, analysts say.

As early as Thursday afternoon, the massive rocket will lift off from the base’s Space Launch Complex 6, leaving a thick white plume over the Pacific Ocean as it cuts across the afternoon sky. At 235 feet tall, it’s so large that base officials have studied whether the thunderous blastoff will shatter windows nearby.

“We got the word out to people, so they don’t think it’s an earthquake,” said Lt. Ann K. Blodzinski, an Air Force spokeswoman. “Even if you don’t see it, you’re definitely going to feel it. It’s significantly more powerful than our typical launches at Vandenberg.”

The Air Force has closed nearby locations, such as Jalama Beach County Park, as a precaution. But that won’t stop townspeople from coming out to see the show, said Lompoc Mayor John Linn. The base is the city’s largest employer.

“Everyone will be in their frontyards for this one,” he said. “Living here, you get used to launches. But this is different. This is the big kahuna.”
